A state senator is calling for a moratorium on truck traffic over Avon Mountain following Friday's truck crashing into a furniture store.

Simsbury Sen. Thomas J. Herlihy, R-District 8, has proposed an immediate moratorium on trucks traveling on Avon Mountain.

"This is unacceptable. I do not think anything more needs be said or done to prove that this road is too dangerous for trucks," Herlihy said in a statement obtained by Eyewitness News.

The senator wrote a letter to state Department of Transportation Commissioner Ralph J. Carpenter requesting the moratorium.

"With all of the safety initiates we have put forth over the last two years to improve the safety of the roadcomma it is clear that more needs to be done," Herlihy said. quote markThe haunting pictures of today's accident scene are beyond convincing and we need to act immediately."

Other lawmakers agreed that banning trucks is an immediate option, but raised concerns about the effects of a ban.

"Are we going to cause another problem on another road that really can't handle that impact?" said Newington Rep. Antonia Guererra, D-District 29.

Eyewitness News called ConnDOT but a representative has not yet returned comment.

Late in the day, the governor called for an emergency meeting of the state traffic commission to discuss a ban on through trucks, an immediate review of other applicable laws to restrict or control truck traffic and increased inspections by the DMV of trucks traveling over Avon Mountain.
