Town Considers Coach Background Checks

Coach's Arrest Encourages Proposal

One Connecticut town is considering making its athletic coaches undergo background checks.

Milford's proposal comes after basketball coach Robert Dulan was sentenced to almost two years in prison for having an affair with a teen player.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Hena Daniels reported that over the weekend, a superior court judge ruled that Dulan will be allowed to coach again.

"You can't have miscellaneous people at school," said parent Courtney Wojnarowski. "These are your children, you need to protect them as much as you can."

Dulin was accused of having a three-year affair with a high school student he coached during summer basketball camp.

Daniels reported that currently in Milford it is the Youth League's responsibility to run background checks and while some teams do, others don't.

If the proposal is approved, every coach, referee or volunteer on the town's fields would have to undergo background checks. If passed, the policy would affect 300 people and cost $25 for every check.

"We should protect our kids. Parks and Recreation has a stipend for the leagues, maybe we should encourage these leagues to use the stipend for that," said Alderman Kerrie Rowland.

Rowland said that it is a parent's job to know who their children are spending time with.

"When you're dealing with youth sports, it's all volunteers," she said. "It can't be on the city. That's not fair to the city or the taxpayers. We all have to work together. If parents get involved themselves, we will all be better."
