Items Seized From Funeral Home

Home's Former Owner Subject Of Investigation

UPDATED: 6:58 pm EDT September 18, 2007

Investigators executed a search warrant at a funeral home in Coventry Tuesday.

State's attorney's office investigators searched the Coventry Funeral Home around noon.

The home's former owner, Kevin Riley, has been under investigation by the Health Department and the state probate court.

Riley's attorney told Eyewitness News that he is unsure why investigators were sent to the home Tuesday.

Riley is accused of entering homes of the deceased and disposing of items without the family's permission.

Riley initially had a contract with the state to oversee the burials of those who died without heirs. A complaint made by a lawyer from the estate of a 91-year-old woman said that Riley overstepped his bounds after her burial.

The lawyer claimed that Riley cleaned out the woman's home and threw away and auctioned off her possessions.

The probate court is investigating that complaint as well as 12 other cases while the health department decides whether to revoke Riley's embalmer's license.

File cabinets and boxes were seized during Tuesday's search.
