Nooses Found At Coast Guard Academy

Black Cadet Finds Noose In Bag Two Months Ago

Nooses found at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy have left the school's superintendent disgusted.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Ray Daudani reported two people left nooses for a student and instructor.

Two months ago on the Coast Guard cutter The Eagle, a black cadet found a noose inside his bag.

"He really was hurt as a result of it. He was very concerned and talked with a number of his cadets, who told him he should come forward," Coast Guard Academy Rear Adm. Scott Burhoe told Eyewitness News on Monday.

Burhoe said he's not aware of any other racially charged incidents and stands by the majority of his cadets.

Burhoe was outraged that the incident happened to a cadet in that training environment. The campus has launched a full investigation and race relations training for the next group of cadets headed to The Eagle.

The investigation came up empty and the white instructor of the race relations classes found a second noose on the floor of her office.

"I would expect the public to hold us to a higher standard, and I do believe we live up to that standard. I think this is something that is so uncharacteristic, which is really what caught all of us surprise," Burhoe said.

The academy corps has 14 percent minority students and 30 percent women. Burhoe said the recent increases of female cadets have made women feel more comfortable.

Burhoe is continuing the search for the culprits and remains proud of the overall academy and its adherence to the Coast Guard's core values of honor, devotion of duty and respect.

"We really can't let the few bring the majority who are doing exactly what they should be doing when they're doing it down," Burhoe said.

Burhoe said he is pushing for more diversity in the corps and faculty to achieve similar results.
