BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Federal authorities say two New Haven police detectives have pleaded guilty to a civil rights charge and stealing government money. Former narcotics Detective Justen Kasperzyk pleaded guilty in federal court in Bridgeport to conspiracy to violate civil rights and theft of government property. His colleague, Detective Jose Silva, pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of an individual's civil rights.Kasperzyk could face at least 10 years in prison, as much as $250,000 in fines and three years of supervised release at sentencing on Jan. 4. Kasperzyk, 36, admitted that during a drug raid last year in New Haven he moved drugs found in the basement of an apartment building to a first-floor apartment. That resulted in the unlawful arrest of a person found in the apartment. The detective also admitted stealing $360 last March that belonged to the FBI and $1,000 during another search."There is a light at the end of the tunnel and we're looking forward to putting this behind us and moving forward," said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. in a written statement. "We hope today's proceedings signal the near-end of this long and tenuous process." Kasperzyk was arrested last March along with the head of the narcotics division, Lt. William White, who was charged with stealing thousands of dollars planted by the FBI during sting operations.
