HARTFORD, Conn. -- The only replica of Anne Frank's hideaway on the East Coast has been damaged by flooding.Chris Philips of the Charter Oak Center built an almost-exact replica where Anne Frank and her family hid for two years during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. The replica is built in the basement of the Charter Oak Center. The stairway to the annex where the family hid was located behind a bookcase. The Hartford replica contained furniture from the period, and photos of celebrities Anne described in her diary.
All of the artifacts of the room were donated by local organizations and people.Last week's powerful storm brought with it floodwaters that chewed up the floor and saturated antique rugs. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jamie Roth reported that water-logged baseboards threaten to topple the entire annex."It was devastating," said Charter Oak Director Rabbi Donna Berman. "It felt like a loved one had been hurt."Berman said cleanup of the annex is progressing and that the house will soon reopen.
