Robbery Sends Schools Into Lockdown

NEWINGTON, Conn. -- Two Newington schools were placed in lockdown Thursday morning after a nearby bank robbery.Police were called to Newington VA Credit Union on Hartford Avenue around 9:45 a.m.
Police said at least one of three masked robbers was armed with a gun.Witnesses said that two of the suspects jumped over the bank's counter and demanded cash.A witness told Eyewitness News that the teller was on the phone with a customer when a man demanded cash. The witness said that the teller was pregnant and that at first she thought the teller was going into labor.The teller could be seen being transported from the bank on a stretcher.Channel 3 Eyewintess News reporter Teresa Labarbera reported that police armed with machine guns responded to the area as Trooper 1 circled the sky above the bank.A man was detained in connection with the robbery, but police determined that he was not involved.Kellogg Middle School and Elizabeth Green Elementary School remained locked down until noon and dozens of officers blocked Mountain Road as the search for the suspects continued.Police said the robbers fled in a yellow Oldsmobile Cutlass, which was later recoverd on Mountain Road.
