State Police Offer Driving Tips

POSTED: 12:01 pm EST December 13, 2007

With Winter Storm Alexander creating slippery roads across the state on Thursday, state police issued tips for drivers forced to drive in the storm.

  • Keep a greater distance than normal between vehicles
  • Check vehicles for proper tires
  • Make sure car has full tank of gas before heading out in storm
  • Make sure vehicle is equipped with an ice scraper, snow brush, working wipers and windshield wiper fluid
  • Keep a charged cell phone and snow shovel in car
  • Remain aware of exact location in case of an emergency
  • Try to use major roads for travel
  • Let someone know your route of travel and estimated time of arrival
  • The use of headlights is required by law during times of limited visibility
  • If involved in a crash, and capable of doing so, move vehicle to side of roadway
  • If car becomes disabled, stay with car -- don't walk to safety.
