UPDATED: 8:01 pm EST December 16, 2007

Icy conditions closed the Wilbur Cross Parkway from Woodbridge to New Haven on Sunday, state police said.

Authorities closed the highway in both directions to allow crews to treat the roadway.

A winter storm dropped a combination of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain overnight into the evening on Sunday.

As of 6 p.m., state police reported responding to 120 crashes on Sunday, 11 of which involved injuries. State police also said troopers reported to as many as 40 spinout calls.

Temperatures dropped well below freezing by 7 p.m. on Sunday. Channel 3 Early Warning Weather Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest said another inch of winter precipitation could coat the surfaces overnight.

Channel 3 Early Warning Weather meteorologist Darren Sweeney reported 14.9 inches of snow has fallen so far in December, and 15.9 inches of snow has fallen on the season. Last winter, for the entire season, the state saw about 24 inches of snow.

Any melted ice or rain that has collected in areas is expected to freeze overnight, and the winds could gust up to 45 to 50 mph on Monday.

The storm on Sunday was light in comparison to Winter Storm Alexander, which dropped as much as a foot of snow in many area of the state on Thursday.
