NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- An internal affairs investigation has been launched within the New Haven Police Department. The investigation was launched after the department received a complaint that a detective had dipped into an informant fund and pocketed the money.President of the New Haven Police Department's union, Louis Cavaliere, confirmed for Eyewitness News that Detective Clarence Willoughby, among others, is the subject of the investigation.Police Chief Francisco Ortiz said that he ordered the investigation after receiving the complaint from the state's attorney's office regarding a 2006 murder investigation."There are several members of the detective bureau that we're investigating," he said. "We've taken countless interviews already, including from members of the public, so these investigations tend to grow, they take a period of time, need a great deal of cooperation from members of the department and community. We'll do it together to find what wrongdoing, if any, exists."In March, investigators removed computers and other items from the home of 40-year veteran police detective William White, who was later convicted of stealing money from drug arrests.Ortiz said that federal investigators are working the latest internal investigation as well. He said the new investigation is not connected to any of the corruption investigates involving White.
