Homicide Suspect's Bond Drops; Witnesses Disappear

New Haven Detective Accused Of Hampering Case

A high-profile murder investigation in New Haven is falling apart as witnesses are disappearing.

New Haven police arrested two people about three months after Scotty Bennett was killed in November 2006.

Errie McClendon was initially held on $2 million bond, but as the case has unraveled, his bond has plummeted. On Friday, McClendon's bond dropped from $95,000 to a written promise to appear in court.

"I think they're trying hard, but I don't think they're pushing as hard as they are pushing, and that's what's frustrating me and my family," said Doug Bethea, Bennett's father.

McClendon remains held in police custody on different juvenile charges, but the change does signal the trouble with the case, especially disappearing witnesses, Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker said.

"What people said before was that people said they saw the person involved in this case -- the person arrested -- shoot him," Bethea said.

Now, those same people are refusing to talk. Prosecutors have pleaded in court for any witness to come forward.

Parker reported that a police internal affairs investigation is also hampering the case. Police are investigating Detective Clarence Willoughby, who worked on the case and is accused of improper payments to an informant.

"They're sitting here telling me, 'It's separate, it's separate. It has nothing to do with it.' I don't believe so," Bethea said.

Parker said the judge made it very clear on Friday that he wants this case to go to trial in the next couple of months.

"Do you think they'll be ready with a case to get these guys then?" Parker asked Bethea.

"If I have anything to do with it, they will be ready," Bethea said.

There's no firm date for when the case will be back in court.
