McLean was a student at Xavier High School in Middletown, and Priore was a student at Notre Dame High School in West Haven.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jessica Schneider reported the car was wrecked beyond recognition. A preliminary investigation indicates the car, a 2003 Nissan 350Z, known for its speed, was traveling southbound on Williams Road when the driver, McClean, lost control in the area of Carter Trail, crossed the center line and the car overturned and struck a tree."The windshield and hood of the car did come in contact high up on a tree," Wallingford police Lt. Alan Zakrzewski said.Authorities said the impact killed the driver and front-seat passenger, McClean and Priore, instantly.Police said the car only seats two people, but a third person, David Cajas, 15, of Wallingford, was found inside the car. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Ray Daudani reported the teens were on their way home from a birthday party nearby."I had just gotten into bed when I heard the sirens," said Reynold Jandreau, who lives nearby.
"It was terrible. It was awful. It looked like the car was just flat. I've never seen anything like that before. It was terrible," said Cate Blair, 17, who lives across from the crash scene.Blair's father was the first to arrive at the scene. He called 911 and noticed that one teen, Cajas, managed to survive"This kid was climbing out of what used to be the rear windshield and he was covered in blood. He was trying to call his family, he was trying to call home," Cate Blair said.Daudani reported there is a slight rise in the road near where the crash occurred."We can't sit out on our back deck without people going airborne off the jump. It's really bad. I have friends that do it on purpose," Cate Blair said.Investigators do not yet know whether McLean just misjudged his speed, but neighbors said the road requires caution."People go fast. It's dangerous because the trees are so close to the road," Cate Blair said.McLean was on the rifle team at Xavier, where the headmaster said McLean was a pleasure to have in class. Priore was a sophomore at Notre Dame who was an avid snowboarder and an excellent student, according to school officials.School was closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but authorities are working to ensure grief counselors will be available at schools on Tuesday.A special prayer service is scheduled to take place at Xavier High School in Middletown. Notre Dame High School in West Haven, which will not have classes on Tuesday because of a faculty development day, will have grief counselors available at the campus from 8 a.m. until noon."It was really heartbreaking, so sad," Blair said. "I feel so bad for their families."
