MADISON, Conn. -- Madison officials have fired the police supervisor of the midnight shift after officers under his watch were accused of inappropriate relations while on duty.A hearing ended at about noon for Sgt. Tim Heiden, who police have accused of failing to monitor officers during their shifts. The officers have been accused of theft, stalking and meeting with prostitutes and felons. The Madison Police Commission decided late Thursday to sustain two of three charges against Heiden. The allegations arose on Jan. 7 during a disciplinary hearing for Heiden. An attorney for Heiden said Heiden was not aware of the actions of the officers, and that Heiden is unfairly taking the blame for the officers' actions.
Accused Officer Faces Panel
Officer Matt Sterling is one of four officers who police said regularly visited prostitutes. Sterling was suspended after his shift on Tuesday.Madison Police Chief Paul Jakubson has called the allegations "disgusting." Jakubson read the charges against Sterling at the commission's hearing, saying he faces charges of misconduct and lying to internal affairs."Only when confronted by a new line of questioning during his redirect examination did Sterling make admissions that he had frequented strip clubs and massage parlors," Jakubson said at the hearing. The chief has recommended to the commission Sterling's termination from the force.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Ray Daudani reported the police department has singled out Fantasies Modeling in Bridgeport, which investigators said is a known house of prostitution.Police said they know exactly how much the establishment often charges for sex, saying that amount is what Sterling is accused of paying at his visits.Detective Testifies To Panel
Detective Sgt. Trent Fox testified before the panel that Sterling and other officers regularly spent time with prostitutes at various spots around town while on duty."You have credible information that at least 30- to 40-some-odd times these women were being brought out to Madison to meet with officers on shift?" Madison Town Attorney William Clendenen asked Fox."Yes, sir," Fox replied.Fox told the commission that the women came up from New Haven and other areas. He said the women were brought to Madison by Albert LeClair, a friend of another accused officer, Bernard Durgin."Albert LeClair is a person who has a drug problem who has been arrested multiple times and is a convicted felon," Fox said.Daudani reported that other lieutenants took the stand Thursday afternoon, saying the accused officers lied to cover up their tracks.
