FARMINGTON, Conn. -- Many consumers see the closed spaces as less places to shop. However, Westfarms Mall representatives said that several new stores are on the way."I know the first inclination is that things aren't going well. But, if you look closely at the barricade, every one of them has a sign on it that's announcing an exciting new store that's coming to the shopping center," said Kevin Keenan, of Westfarms Mall. "In fact it's great news for the mall."Keenan said that the mall renovations are a matter of timing. He said that the last major renovation took place in 1997 and the leases generally last for 10 years. Some shoppers told Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker that they are pleased to see construction at the mall."I think it's definitely a good thing because you're adding new stores and new places for us to shop," said Regina Scafariello, of Wallingford.Meghan Kokas, of East Granby, said the changes will widen the variety of shops."I like to try things on in different clothing stores," said Kate Bannon, of Willington, who said the expansion of stores at the mall in Farmington is good for the economy.Parker reported that one of the most visible changes at the mall will be the main entrance. He said the area is getting a face-lift. In addition, P.F. Chang's, H&M and Tiffany's are slated to join the shops at the center.Mall management told Eyewitness news that the new improvements have nothing to do with the opening across town of Blue Back Square in West Hartford."Redevelopment of the shopping center has been consistent over the last 33 years," said Keenan.
