Funeral Plans Released In Officer's Death

Theories Developed In Case Of Norwalk Officer's Fatal Shooting

POSTED: 11:59 am EDT March 24, 2008
UPDATED: 6:42 pm EDT March 24, 2008

Norwalk police said they have developed several possible theories in their investigation of the shooting death of Officer Matthew Morelli, and they are pursuing each one vigorously.

Morelli, 38, an 11-year veteran of the department, was shot early Friday morning in a parking lot shortly after telling dispatchers that he was looking into suspicious activity. Police throughout the region launched a manhunt for suspects, but none have been found.

Police are not releasing the theories they have developed. They say state police forensic scientists will be testing physical evidence Monday and that a news conference had been scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Funeral Announced

Norwalk police announced funeral arrangements for Morelli on Monday

On Wednesday evening, a wake will be held at the Collins Funeral Home at 92 East Ave. in Norwalk from 5 to 9 p.m.

On Thursday morning, a Mass will be held at St. Matthew's Church at 216 Scribner Ave. in Norwalk at 9:30 a.m., with a burial to follow at St. John's Cemetery at 223 Richards Ave. in Norwalk.

In lieu of flowers, police said contributions were requested to a trust fund set up for Morelli's 6-year-old daughter, Sydney.

Contributions to the fund can be sent to:

Sydney Anne Morelli Trust Fund
c/o Fitzmaurice & Siegel
1281 East Main St.
Stamford, CT 06902

Investigation Continues

A spokeswoman for the state's medical examiner said on Saturday a conclusion on the cause and manner of Matthew Morelli's death is pending until more studies are concluded.

Officials recovered weapons -- including the officer's gun -- at the scene. It's unknown what may led up to the shooting.

The 11-year veteran's death marks the city's fifth police officer killed in the line of duty.

The FBI and state police are helping Norwalk authorities with the investigation.
