WINCHESTER, Conn. -- A vandalism spree ended with two homes being burglarized in the northwest corner of the state early Wednesday morning, according to police.Five Winsted teens have been charged in connection with the crimes.Police said numerous mailboxes were vandalized in Norfolk, Colebrook and Winsted.Don Bounds told Eyewitness News that he was one of many residents on Winsted's Danbury Quarter Road who found his mailbox damaged on Wednesday morning.
"I came out to get the mail and I pulled the ting down and the whole mailbox came out at me," he said. The teens are accused of then entering an occupied home in Norfolk before burglarizing a home on Danbury Quarter Road.Police said several household items were stolen from the home, before the burglars were scared away by the homeowner.Police stopped a car that was speeding away from the burglary on Route 44 and said the passengers matched the description given by burglary victim. All five of the teens, four of whom police said were Winsted 17-year-olds, were taken into police custody.Police said 18-year-old Noah Pierce, of Winsted was also arrested.Pierce, the wrestling captain at Gilbert School, turned 18 in January and is facing adult charges."He is sad, he is upset, he is scared, he is frightened, and as you can see, he's crying," public defender Carol Goldberg said of Pierce in court on Wednesday. "This is a horrifying experience for him."Police said that Pierce admitted to the vandalism spree in a statement to police."They were laughing, and said that they went through two doors and that (two of the boys) kicked in the door and that some guy yelled at them and they threw a chair at him and ran off," he said, according to the statement. The teens were charged with burglary, larceny and at least 14 counts of criminal mischief.Because of their ages, the four other suspects are being treated as youthful offenders.
