Street-Racing Sting Yields More Than 100 Arrests

Police: Racers, Onlookers Taken Into Police Custody

Police arrested more than 100 people in connection with street races over the weekend in Hartford.

Hartford police arrested 106 people -- 95 of whom for racing or watching the race. Officers said that 11 people also received summons for trespassing. It's illegal to street race or watch a race in Connecticut.

Some of those arrested were participating in races, while others were watching the races, according to police.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Aleesha Chaney reported skid marks are the only visible signs left of the street racing.

Kim Hopkins, of Hartford, walks West Service Road regularly and has seen cars race by.

"I saw two cars starting to drag race. The first one went, and it was a Camaro, and he went first. Then, there was a second Mercedes behind him.

Chaney said street racing has become a growing problem in Hartford's North Meadows neighborhood, resulting in a sting operation by Hartford police on Sunday morning.

Police said the arrests were made after officers conducted surveillance in the area.

"It's alarming. It's frightening," said Jerry Reed, a runner. "It can be very dangerous. I run basically during lunch time. There are a lot of cars but I can usually see them from a distance."

"There was one gentleman who had a older Mustang that we called the police on several times, and finally, he's gone," Hopkins said.

Court dates for those taken into custody are spread out over the next month.
