An 85-year-old man with mental problems stabbed his 83-year-old wife and their grown daughter in Hebron, state police said.

Troopers responded to a stabbing call at about 1 a.m. at the daughter's home on Senate Brook Drive.

The caller reported that his father-in-law severely beat his wife, Francious Genesse, 83, and assaulted his daughter with a knife. She was transported to Hartford Hospital in critical condition.

State police said the man's daughter, Monique Gonsalves, 58, was treated at the scene for minor knife wounds after she tried to intervene.

Police said Clermont Genesse, 85, and his wife were staying with their 48-year-old daughter and were soon moving into a retirement home.

Around 9:30 p.m., the daughter, Monique Gonsalves, said she heard her mother screaming and when she entered the bedroom she saw her father swinging down on her mother repeatedly.

She said she tried to stop her father, but he stabbed in her in the neck.

Clermont Gemesse was diagnosed with stage two Alzheimer's.

When police interviewed him, they said he said he was planning on killing himself after his wife because he did not want them to live a miserable life.

In court, his attorney said the 85-year-old was not aware of his surroundings.

The judge set Genesse's bond at $1 million and will now evaluate if he is competent to stand trial.
