UPDATED: 6:40 pm EDT May 13, 2008

An armed man robbed an East Haddam bank on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Police said a man armed with what was thought to be a knife entered the Liberty Bank on Palmer Road just after 2 p.m.

The Nearby East Haddam Elementary School was put in a state of lockdown after the robbery. The lockdown lasted for about 15 minues, according to police.

East Haddam Superintendent Ellen Solek said that all students were released at 3 p.m., and escorted to buses while entrances were monitored by state police.

All activities were cancelled at the school for the day.

Police described the man as possibly being a white man who was wearing dark clothing, a hat and paintball-type mask. Witnesses said the man may be about 18 or 19 years old.

He was described as being 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 150 pounds.

The man was carrying a black, duffle bag, according to police. He was given an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing the bank on foot, police said.

Troopers assisted the school with the dismissal of students.

The search for the robber continued at 5 p.m.
