Police said several Wesleyan University students have been arrested after a clash with police who broke up a campus party.

Five students were arrested early Friday and face charges that include inciting a riot. The arrests occurred around 1:30 a.m.

Students Allege Excessive Force Against Police

  • Andrew Price, 23, was charged with assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer, inciting a riot and possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana.
  • Andrew Dermont, 20, was charged with reckless endangerment, assault on a police officer, interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct and inciting a riot.
  • Derek Silverman, 21, was charged with interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct and inciting a riot.
  • Christopher Folley, 19, was charged with disorderly conduct and inciting a riot.
  • Ian Trancynber, 21, was charged with disorderly conduct, inciting a riot and criminal mischief.
  • University police called for backup from Middletown and state police.

"There were approximately 250 students in the streets," said Sgt. Scott Aresco. "When officers arrived, they threw bottles at the officers as they were trying to disperse the students.

Students accused police of using excessive force, and said officers used pepper spray and pepper balls.

"That's only used a last resort," Aresco said. "We told them to move along and they refused. At that point, that's when the pepper spray and pepper balls were used."

One of the students remained in the hospital on Friday after being bit by a police dog.

Police Chief Patrick McMahon told Eyewitness News that the dog attack was an accident. He said that a student attacked an officer, and the dog did what he was trained to do: fight back.
