Suspected Armed Robber Arrested After Standoff

Three Schools Locked Down After Robbery

A man suspected in an armed robber in Haddam was taken into police custody after an hours-long standoff.

Three Haddam schools were locked down on Wednesday afternoon after the robbery. Students were kept inside Haddam Elementary School, Haddam Middle School and Haddam High School until about 5 p.m.

Police said the JD Food Mart on Saybrook Road was robbed by a man armed with a handgun around 2:30 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing shots fired at the Food Mart.

A vehicle believed to be used in connection with the robbery was then located at Haddam Elementary School, according to police. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker reported that officers smashed in a window in the car to search for evidence.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker reported that multiple state troopers responded to the school and that Trooper One was flying overhead. Route 154 was also closed while officers searched for the robber.

Parker reported that officers had surrounded a building where they believed the robber was hiding at 3:45 p.m. Police said they believed the man was hiding in his apartment on the building's second floor.

The suspect, later identified as Eli Suciu, turned himself in to police just before 7 p.m.
