Security Breach Affecting Shareholders

Personal Information Stolen Off Bank Truck

UPDATED: 5:36 pm EDT May 30, 2008

Customers of People's United Bank are not the only consumers affected by a recent major security breach.

Thousands of shareholders of companies like Disney and John Hancock have also been put at risk of identity theft.

Transaction details from those companies were also on the data tape that was stolen out of the back of a Bank of New York Mellon truck.

Attorney Richard Blumenthal announced Friday that New York Mellon has agreed to provide free safeguards, such as credit monitoring and theft insurance for consumers whose information was on the tapes.

"These stronger safeguards, combined with this striking information, are vital first steps to protect consumers against this massive, inexplicable and inexcusable security breach by New York Mellon," Blumenthal said.

The stolen tapes are still unaccounted for and reportedly contain the names, addresses and Social Security numbers of more than 400,000 Connecticut residents, and millions of people nationwide.
