Woman Claims Water Came From Gas Pump

Driver: Car Plagued With Mechanical Issues After Fill-Up

A Waterford woman claims that an East Lyme gas station is selling watered-down gas.

Stephanie Hughes said she began having mechanical issues with her daughter's car when she filled an almost empty tank at Corey's Gas Station.

She said after leaving the gas station, the car traveled about a half-block before the engine died and the car wouldn't start.

"The tank was empty, filled up the tank, pulled out of the gas station, the car died," Hughes said.

Hughes said that was the first in a series of problems that cost the family more than $1,200 in repairs.

She said the garage pumped out the gas that was in the car's tank and found it was full of water.

Hughes said the water could have only come from the gas at Corey's. She said that since the discovery, she has been unable to get together with the manager of the station to work out a settlement.

"When I called the manager and explained what happened, he said to send him the receipts and send him a letter and he'd send it to the insurance company and get it reimbursed," Hughes said.

Hughes said she has all of the paperwork from the repairs as well as the receipt from the fill-up at Corey's on the day in question.

Sal Corey, the station's manager said he gave Hughes the name and phone number of his insurance company. Hughes claims that Corey shouted at her before hanging up.

"My understanding is that the car might need a new engine," Hughes said. "I’m a single mom and my daughter's graduating this year."
