A man was killed Saturday after the vehicle in which he was driving struck a light pole.

Hamden police said they responded to Circular Avenue and Church Street after residents in the area reported the crash.

Police said the vehicle, driven by a 50-year-old New Haven man, left a driveway of a nearby house and drove southbound across the lawn of Blessed Sacrament Church, struck shrubs and a wooden fence, and finally came to a stop after striking a light pole.

The driver was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the driver was not release pending the notification of his next of kin.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Hamden Police Department at 230-4030.
