UPDATED: 7:26 pm EDT July 16, 2008

A car crashed into a Hamden book store early Wednesday morning, according to police.

Police said the car crashed into Books & Co. on Whitney Avenue just before 1 a.m.

The driver of the car fled the scene, leaving the car behind, police said.

Jeannie Schiel said she lives nearby with her terrier, Harold.

"We had sirens all night long and it kind of kept us awake because Harold doesn't like the sound," she said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said, and the store is boarded up.

Police said they're looking for the driver.
