The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection announced Tuesday that a 54-year-old man, formerly of Ridgefield, was pronounced dead after being taken from the water at Pierrepont Pond at Seth Low Pierrepont State Park in Ridgefield.

The man was kayaking Monday afternoon, officials said, and went overboard.

Witnesses said they saw him splashing in the water and heard him calling for help before going under the water.

The DEP's Environmental Conservation police and Ridgefield police and fire departments responded. The Connecticut State Police Dive Team searched Monday night until about 11 p.m., police said. The search resumed Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., they said.

The man was found in the pond at approximately 1:30 p.m., they said.

The name of the victim was not being released until the victim’s family was notified, police said. The incident was under investigation by Connecticut EnCon Police, officials said.
