OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. -- An Old Saybrook day care is evacuated after an item resembling a pipe bomb is found in the street. An area of King Street and Boston Post Road was evacuated at about 11 a.m. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin Hogan reported that children were evacuated from the day care and residents were brought from homes to the public library.Deputy Police Chief Michael Spera told Eyewitness News that a driver spotted a suspicious item in the roadway and called police.“Someone driving their car saw a black cylinder with a wire and red button and contacted 911,” said Spera. “It looks like a flashlight but again some interesting things taped to it. So our investigation will continue, and we're going to find out why it was in front of the daycare.”
The day care Director Donna Jeffrey said the children were scheduled to take a field trip to the local library on Tuesday, so the children were taken to a diner and the library during the situation.“I went inside told the kids we're going on a bus and we're going to the diner,” said Jeffrey. “It’s as simple as that. We have fire drills one a month.”Hogan reported that the device was removed by the State Police Bomb Squad at about 11:45 a.m.
