MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The new Ben Stiller movie is a comedy, but the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress and the ARC of Connecticut aren’t laughing. The groups are upset with the use of the “R-word” in the film.“We don't think it's right to use the word as a joke as a way to provoke humor,” said Walter Glomb, president of the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress. “We think it's demeaning to those individuals.”“We're not trying to censor,” said Lynn Warner, ARC executive director. “What we're trying to do is educate people on why this is so hurtful. We hope people understand why this language is hurtful.”The parody uses what the group calls derogatory language toward people with intellectual disabilities.“I think it's rude to people who have disabilities, too,” said Kristen Saraceno, 15.
