NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Mothers who are part of Connecticut's home-birthing community showed up outside New Britain Superior Court to support two midwives who perform home births.Attorney Diane Polan is arguing for her clients’ rights to continue practicing as midwives despite the state medical examining board ordering the woman to cease. That ruling was issued six months ago.Polan appealed the decision. She said midwives aren’t in the scope of medicine. She said it’s the care of a woman during childbirth.During the appeal process, Polan said her clients were worried they'd be found in contempt if they continued being midwives.During an appeals hearing Monday, the judge ruled the order to cease and desist from the practice of medicine too vague to enforce during the appeal process.“My clients are practicing a profession,” said Polan. “They're making a living, and they want to continue to do that without having the threat of being called into court on contempt.”
