LEDYARD, Conn. -- Hundreds of AT&T customers in Ledyard lost telephone service after police said a bullet was fired into sensitive telephone equipment.Telephone company employees were still reconnecting service Thursday, four days after phone service went dead.Ledyard police said a bullet killed the service just before midnight Saturday. They said that when technicians from AT&T arrived at the scene and opened up an electronic device, they found a bullet inside, which they said severed 500 telephone lines.Police said the real danger was the lack of communication if anyone needed medical assistance or had another emergency.“We just drove by it and we were curious where the actual shot was, if it was up on the line or a box on the ground,” said resident Brian Hill.Ledyard police said a communication device was shot near Christy Hill and Ledgewood roads. The device links 14,000 lines. In a statement, Ledyard police said, “We would appreciate any information regarding this incident, or any incident involving weapons.”
