Want Pizza, Beer? Just Look For Fire Truck

Piazzetta Owner Turns Vintage Fire Truck Into Mobile Pizza Place

Some people, like Chris Owens, may call pizza, beer and a vintage fire truck a trifecta.

“When I stopped and saw this fire truck for sale, the wheels started turning and I figured I could put a pizza oven and a beer tap and have a reason to own a fire truck,” said Owens, the owner of the Pizzetta Company 77 Mobile Pizza Unit.

Owens, who owns Pizzetta in Mystic, spent $50,000 to make that dream a reality. Ten weeks after coming up with the idea, he said, he was just about ready to roll.

“We can do private parties, we can do town fairs, festivals, like I said, fundraisers -- sky's the limit,” said Owens.

With ingenuity, hard work, and a lot of help from the people at Noank Village Boatyard, Owens said he turned the truck into a rolling pizza shop -- with all the amenities.

“We put a reach-in cooler, and this is where the kegs will go for the beer,” he said. “What I've tried to do is preserve the character of the fire truck, honor its former use.”

“Excellent, best thing that could have happened to the truck,” said Bob Helbig, of Village Boatyard. “Put out a lot of fires, now it's pumping out a lot of pizzas.”

The truck is authentic down to the smallest detail, said Owens, with modifications here and there to signal its new mission and give it some zip.

There's even a beer drain to drain off the excess beer, said Owens, but there's never any excess beer.

The truck can pump out about a half-dozen pizzas every 10 minutes, Owens said.

He said all he wants to do is make people happy and have some fun in the process.
