Hate-Crime Victim Accused In Hate Crime

Quinnipiac Student Dismissed From School.

The victim of a hate crime has been accused of committing a hate crime himself.

The accused Quinnipiac University basketball player turned himself in to Hamden police Friday.

Police said Harold Washington, 18, of Maryland, was the victim of a hate crime committed by his former roommate in October.

Several weeks ago the roommate, Charles Merritt, was arrested in connection with hate crimes against three black basketball players, including Washington.

Police said that on Nov. 5, one of the victims of the original incident said that he was concerned that his online Facebook account had been accessed and that someone had left racial slurs on the page. Police said that after an investigation, they believe Washington to be behind the slurs.

Students who spoke with Eyewitness News expressed frustration at what they called an isolated incident that was casting a campus-wide shadow.

In a written statement, the university president said Washington had been dismissed from the school.

Police did not say whether they believe Merritt and Washington were working together in the alleged crimes, but did admit the harassment was similar.

Washington was released on a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 28.
