Route 2 Sees High Number Of Crashes

Couple Says It Wants Something Done

Connecticut State Police said there have been 222 crashes on state roads this year, many of them happening on routes 2 and 2A.

One couple said Preston has the bulk of the incidents because the road connects to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino.

"(People are) falling asleep behind the wheel, too much to drink, too fast and too much traffic," resident Carol Matsumoto said.

Four reasons for thousands of dollars in damage and distress according to the matsumoto's of poquetanuck village in preston.

“One day there may be a car in our house," Ted Matsumoto said.

Over the years, the Matsumotos, who live in Paquetanuck Village, said cars, trucks and even casino tour buses have slammed into the stone wall in front of their house.

“Thirty or 40 times, some minor, some major,” Ted Matsumoto said.

Even firefighters said they face problems not too far away. They said they’ve responded to 60 incidents since 2005.

"Speed's a problem, combined with the volume of traffic,” said Fire Chief Tom Casey.

But the Matsumotos also blame the engineering of the road, causing cars to slide into the stone wall, and exhausted gamblers.

“Our two big accidents were people sound asleep," Carol Matsumoto said.

Several residents oppose a Department of Transportation plan to build a bypass connecting Route 12 with Route 2.

Although he's voted to oppose the bypass in the past, First Selectman Robert Congdon said, “Any group of citizens can bring a petition to try and overturn the residents’ referendum.”

But he said there's no money at the state level to build a bypass, so it's a moot point.

The Matsumotos said they plan to build another barrier around the wall and continue requesting constant state police presence to keep an eye on the road and drivers.
