With bankruptcies on the rise as a result of the tough economy, many brides have said they've been left in a lurch on their wedding day.

But officials said an insurance policy could reduce some of the stress that comes with the big day.

Stacey Solomon said she was left shocked and upset when the Danielson bridal shop where she planned to get her wedding dress abruptly closed in October. She said she didn't know what to do.

"I feel I was unfairly treated," Solomon said. "She has $1,000, and I have nothing to show for it."

If Solomon had wedding insurance, she would have been protected.

Connecticut's Better Business Bureau said Travelers Insurance has reported that more than 40 percent of all wedding insurance claims filed in the past two years have involved unforeseen problems with vendors and venues, some of which went bankrupt.

Howard Schwartz, of the Better Business Bureau, said wedding insurance can cover a lot of things, such as a cancellation due to bad weather or military deployment. He said it can cost anywhere from $100 to $140 and is made in a one-time payment.

In addition, Schwartz said anyone who files a claim must have all of their records and receipts.
