Schools On Alert Amid H1N1 Death

Waterbury Woman Dies From Virus

As the first death from the H1N1 influenza A virus is reported in Connecticut, schools arcross the state are on full alert.

A student at Breaburn Elementary School in West Hartford has been confirmed as having the virus as has a student at Tyrrell Middle School in Wolcott, bringing the number of confirmed Connecticut cases to 397.

Parents at Braeburn School were being asked to keep their children home if they fell ill and to report the symptoms to school staff.

School officials said the affected child got sick while out of the state and has not been back since becoming ill.

Tyrrell Middle School will be closed for the rest of the week after four students tested positive for the H1N1 virus. At least two of the students went on a class trip to Washington DC last week.

The state Department of Public Health confirmed the first death in Connecticut from the virus on Wednesday. They said a Waterbury woman over the age of 60 died Tuesday morning after being hospitalized at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Health officials said the woman had underlying risk factors that may have made her more vulnerable to the virus.

Three people in Connecticut, including the Waterbury woman, have been hospitalized because of the virus. Health officials said most of those in the state who have developed the virus have only had mild symptoms.
