Architect Testifies In Rapper's Lawsuit

Expert: Estimates Off By As Much As $2M

The lawsuit filed by rap star 50 Cent against a Bloomfield engineering firm continued Thursday as the celebrity's lawyers questioned an expert about the firm's inspection report.

Lawyers for 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, said the estimate that engineering firm BVH Integrated Services Inc. gave him before he bought his Farmington mansion is 2003 was more than $2 million off the mark.

Jackson said he paid the company $14,000 to conduct an inspection and give an estimate on the cost of work needed at the home, which he bought for $4.1 million from Mike Tyson.

In court Thursday, Jackson's attorney, Michael Feldman, asked his expert witness, architect James Cicalo, if it was important for Jackson to get accurate figures before buying the home.

"Any purchaser wants to know what to expect," said Cicalo, of FSI Architects.

During several hours on the witness stand, Cicalo told Hartford Superior Court Judge Eliot Prescott that he believes BVH was off on many of its estimates, perhaps by as much as $2 million.

For instance, he said BVH estimated that a roof replacement for the 50,000-square-foot mansion would cost $250,000, but that the actual cost for the "roof replacement of the main house, I think it's $549,000."

But BVH's attorney, Michael Byrne argued that the company was hired to give very preliminary estimates in a short period of time.

On Wednesday, Prescott heard from the BVH Vice President Greg van Deusen, who put the estimate together. He said it happened too early for true accuracy.

"It's as helpful as it can be at that stage of the project," he said.

The trial was continued to Friday, at which time the defense will call witnesses. The first is expected to be van Deusen, who will return to the stand to talk about how BVH came up with the estimates.

The defense also plans to call house appraisers on the stand to discuss whether they believe Jackson got his money's worth.
