HEBRON, Conn. -- After a month of work and $60,000, a children's camp in Hebron is optimistic it will be as good as new when it open in July.Workers from Burnham Building and Remodeling were busy Thursday replacing the windows in the main building at Camp Hi Hoti. All 45 windows were destroyed by vandals in April."It's just saddening to think that someone would do this, and I'm sure it was a few of them because it took a lot of time for the damage that was done to occur," the camp's executive director said.Officials said windows, toilets, sinks, lighting fixtures and more were destroyed in the incident."In here, they had busted out this whole wall," the camp's executive director said. "I mean, it was completely gone, and we wanted to keep it the same, in the same manner that it was, so this was expensive putting this back together."Hartford Neighborhood Centers has been running the camp for children from Hartford and the surrounding area since 1955. Camp officials said they've had small problems in the past with vandals, but nothing like the destruction in April."We have the contractors out here now installing all the windows that were broken, all the wood in the arts and crafts room, and the nurse's station and the pavilion," the executive director of the camp said.Between the insurance settlement and donations, the foundation has been able cover the cost of repairs so that it can serve the 50 to 60 campers who use the facilities during the summer and the 80 to 100 children who use them on the weekends during the school year. The vandals who did the damage haven't been caught, but the camp's executive director said that's not her concern."My job was to just make sure that we could open so we could service the kids," the camp's executive director said. "We're ready to go."
