Town: Tornado Damage Estimated At $500K

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. -- Estimates for the damage suffered in Wethersfield after a tornado touched down on Friday have reached about $500,000.Town manager Bonnie Therrien said the town plans to ask for $100,000 for the initial cleanup of the town.The town green was the hardest-hit part of town during the storm, officials said. They said crews worked over the weekend to clear away hundreds of fallen trees.In addition to the town green, the storm brought destruction to several homes and businesses.Officials said all of the trees uprooted in the storm, which brought winds that blew up to 90 mph, will eventually be cut up and removed, but the effects of the storm will last a while. They said a local nursery lost many of its plants and business because it had no power.A local creamery also said business suffered. Officials at the creamery said nothing could be saved once the power was lost. They said everything had to be thrown out."About $10,000 (was lost) between products and sales," owner Paula Rubinow said.Gov. Jodi Rell said the state is pursuing federal assistance to help property owners affected by the storm. She said she has also directed state emergency management officials to begin surveying the damage.
