A flurry of police activity took place at an East Hartford apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers said they were called to a first-floor apartment at 269 Main St. at about 3:30 p.m. They said they had received reports of a loud argument and popping noises.

Upon arrival, police said, officers found a 35-year-old man with gunshot injuries.

“I was looking out my window trying to find out what was going on,” said Michael Connelly, who lives in the apartment complex. “They wouldn't tell me anything.”

Connelly, who has lived in the apartment complex for six years, said he was in shock.

“Since I've been here, it’s been pretty quiet,” he said. “It sort of makes you wonder what's up with the world when someone gets shot in their own apartment.”

Carol Gilbert said she was at a facility next door to the apartment complex when the incident occurred.

"They locked the door over there and told us to come back inside," she said.

The victim was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police were at the scene for hours investigating. They said they had a car towed from the scene as part of the investigation.

Police said they had tentatively identified the victim but were still waiting for a positive ID. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Police said they don't know what happened or why the victim was shot.

The victim’s family said he was a happy, caring person who had been dating his girlfriend for more than a decade.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the East Hartford Police Department at 860-528-4401.
