Man Shot Multiple Times In Apartment, Police Say

Police have released the identity of a man fatally shot in his apartment in East Hartford on Tuesday.

Police said they were called to 269 Main St. at about 3:30 p.m. because someone heard arguing and loud popping sounds coming from one of the apartments. When they arrived, they said, they found William Castillo, who had been shot multiple times.

Castillo was taken to Hartford Hospital, police said, where he was pronounced dead.

They said Castillo was a sneaker salesman who worked from his home and car.

People gathered in front of a Main Street memorial Wednesday to honor Castillo.

Tanie Gonzalez said she saw Castillo a lot.

“(I knew him) from where I live, at my project,” she said. “He’d drive around there. He chilled with a lot of guys around there."

Former neighbor Otis Rodgers, who came to Castillo's first-floor apartment to pay his respects, said he can’t understand why someone would do this.

"He was a good neighbor,” said Rodgers said. “When I was over here, he was an excellent neighbor. Yeah, we'd give a little cookout. He'd come out over here, sit out with us, you know what I mean? Good stuff."

"We haven't been able to find out what happened, other than someone got shot," resident Andy Arthur said.

The state medical examiner said Castillo died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Jason Smola at 860-291-7541 or the East Hartford Crime Tip Line at 860-289-9134. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
