Police: Suspicious Bag Contained Clothes

Bag Found Outside Travelers Building

UPDATED: 6:42 pm EDT July 2, 2009

Police were called to the Travelers Insurance building in Hartford on Thursday afternoon after a suspicious bag was discovered near the building.

The building, located at 750 Main St., was evacuated at about 12:25 p.m.

Police said the incident forced them to close Main Street from City Hall to the Travelers Tower.

Travelers made the decision to evacuate after one of their security guards found a duffel bag in a courtyard near their building, officials said.

Members of Hartford's Bomb Squad took pictures of the duffel bag in order to see what was inside. As they waited for results, police said, they tried to keep people from the area.

They said the contents of the bag turned out to be clothing.

"We have x-rays to see what's inside," Hartford Police Capt. Paul Ciesinski said. "Nothing was dangerous. We didn't find any explosives."
