ROCKY HILL, Conn. -- With Independence Day falling on a Saturday this year and gas prices rising, many Connecticut residents said they're putting the brakes on holiday travel plans.Avon resident Arman Perera said his plans for the holiday include fueling up, keeping the top down and staying close to home.
"I'm going to meet my friend and go on his boat," he said. "It's much more convenient with the economy and other issues."According to AAA, gas prices are hovering near the $2.70 mark in Connecticut, which is cheaper than the $4-plus price last year."I think it's still too high," Darien resident Hari Avula said.Despite the cost, the Avula family said it plans to pack up its minivan and head to Vermont for the weekend.Boaters in Portland showing their U.S. pride said it's not the bad economy or gas prices keeping them docked."Gas has nothing to do with it," said Jarvis Bartland, of Portland Boat Works. "It's weather, really."
