Savin Rock Fireworks Saved

Community Rallies To Raise Needed Funds

It’s official: The show will go in West Haven.

The city's fireworks display at Savin Rock Park was in jeopardy because of budget problems, but was saved when the community rallied together.

Officials said the show costs about $20,000 to $25,000. They said donations fell way short this year, but that at the last minute some big fundraisers held in town closed the gap.

The Texas Roadhouse.on Saw Mill Road offered to pitch in all of its lunch profits on a recent Friday, and a nearby carwash offered donated a portion of each sale to the Savin Rock Fireworks Committee.

Dick Allspaug, 76, said he's thankful the show has been saved because he's been going to it for years.

"It wouldn't be the Fourth of July without it," he said.

Officials said about 100,000 people were expected to attend the event on Friday. They said a band was scheduled to play at 7 p.m. and that the fireworks were scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
