Child’s Shirt Catches Fire From Sparkler

HARTFORD, Conn. -- A child suffered second-degree burns to 15 percent of his body in a fireworks accident in Hartford Saturday night, police said.The boy, believed to be about 6 years old was injured during a back yard Fourth Of July celebration on Broadview Terrace.Police said the boy went to the party with his uncle and wasn’t known by the family hosting the party. Witnesses said a group of adults and children were in the backyard and the children were playing with fireworks while supervised. They said another boy accidentally lit the victim’s shirt on fire with a sparkler while watching fireworks going off in the sky.The boy suffered burns to his chest, stomach and underneath his left arm.Witnesses said the boy became afraid when his shirt caught fire and began running and the host tackled him to the ground and rolled him to get the fire out. Police said the host burned her hand attempting to put the fire out.The host and a nurse neighbor gave the boy ice and a cold towel until emergency workers arrived.The boy was taken to a hospital in Boston because of the extent of the burns.The family told Eyewitness News that the sparklers were legal and were purchased at WalMart.Firefighters said the boy is expected to recover.
