Firefighters Pull Driver From Submerged Car

Car Lands In Fairfield River

POSTED: 12:22 pm EDT July 5, 2009

A man was pulled from his car by Fairfield firefighters after driving it into a river off of Route 59 Saturday.

Fairfield fire officials said the driver, a 42-year-old Easton resident, drove his vehicle off Route 59, through several bushes, over a lawn before striking a tree and landing in the 7-foot deep waterway.

Officials said the rear of the vehicle was suspended by its bumper and the front end rested in the water.

Fire officials said the injured driver became trapped in the submerged car. Emergency workers were able to pull the car from the water and pull out the driver. He was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center. His condition remains unknown.

Members of the Department of Environmental Protection were notified because small amounts of oily fluid had leaked from the vehicle, fire officials said.

Brooklawn Parkway was closed for about two hours because of the crash.
