HARWINTON, Conn. -- More than 300 chickens and roosters were seized in a cockfighting investigation at a Harwinton home on Friday.State police said they received a tip regarding poultry at the Litchfield Road home on Thursday night and a search and seizure warrant was issued.
Roosters, Hens Seized In Cockfighting Investigation Police said there was evidence of animal cruelty and violations of state gaming regulations at the property. Police said they were investigating whether the birds were being bred for use in cockfighting.Wayne Kasacek with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture said cockfighting paraphernalia was found inside the home."State police found cockfighting paraphernalia in the residence: spurs, glue, medicines. The birds themselves appear to have been dressed for fighting," he said.State police, animal control officers and fire officials were at the property on Litchfield Road late Friday morning. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Len Besthoff reported from the scene that there were at least two dozen different departments at the property."We just heard roosters; we just thought it was a farm of some type -- a chicken farm or something like that," said neighbor Douglas Craig.No arrests had been made as of Friday night.
