A 50-year-old man died after being pulled from the waters near the boat launch on the Connecticut River in Cromwell.

Cromwell police were called to the river for reports of someone in the water just after 3 p.m.

"It just looked like a 45-year-old guy in swim trunks," said witness Ryan Ireton. "They were pumping his chest, doing CPR."

Rescue workers went into the water and began treating the man. He was taken to Middlesex Hospital, where he later died.

Police said the man, identified as Anthony Varricchio Jr., 50, of Cromwell, fell into the river from one of the docks as he was tying up his boat.

Police reminded residents to wear life jackets and travel in pairs when around water.
