MONTVILLE, Conn. -- The state’s budget crisis has state police on alert.Troopers are not only concerned about their spending budget, they’re worried about manpower. The union claims the budget stalemate is affecting the number of troopers that will be on hand to fight crime.Gov. Jodi Rell said she’s supporting state police the best she can.The union claims that public safety is at risk, with 1,148 troopers on staff. That number is below the legislated mandate minimum of 1,248 troopers. The union said 125 sworn members of the state police force retired this summer.Supported by local and legislative leaders, the president of the Connecticut State Police Union was critical Tuesday of Rell’s plan to train 45 new state police recruits, and not the 80 as requested.“The class of 80 would put us at a far better position in a year and a half from now when they graduate the Academy than a class of 45,” said union President Steve Rief.“I am one who is very concerned about the early retirement program has done to the staffing program for the troopers on the road,” said state Sen. Andrea Stilman. In a statement to Eyewitness News, the governor’s office said, “Under Gov. Rell, state trooper ranks have steadily increased, and as of this past February, we’re at the highest staffing level in over a decade. Gov. Rell has always been firmly committed to maintaining a strong and robust force.”The town of North Stonington saw three resident troopers retire recently. First Selectman Nick Mullane said answering police calls comes in order of priority.“We’re thin right now. When a call comes in, if it’s not life-threatening, it will wait,” Mullane said. The governor’s office said Rell will not let public safety be compromised and she’ll continue to ensure that trooper staffing levels are adequate.
