MARLBOROUGH, Conn. -- The body of a Hartford man was found in Lake Terramuggus in Marlborough Friday night.

State police dive teams were called to the lake Friday afternoon to search for the body of the missing man.

Dive teams were later called out of the water and a sonar system was used to search for the man, whose body was found at about 8:30 p.m.

The man was identified Saturday as Verlon Barnes, 56.

Department of Environmental Protection officials said Barnes had been fishing with a friend, but dropped the friend off because of the rain.

About an hour later, DEP officials said the friend returned and saw the rowboat anchored and Barnes missing.

Emergency crews said several inches of water was found in the boat.

People who know the lake said it’s normally very quiet and that no motorboats are allowed. Sgt. Chris Dwyer said rescues at the lake are unusual.

“It’s a small boat, light traffic, most people are from Marlborough or the lake itself,” he said.
