Free services from health screenings to energy assistance were offered to the homeless and to those at risk of becoming homeless at an event hosted by Middlesex Community College in Middletown.

The event was a collaboration between the college and the Middlesex United Way as an effort to reach out to and assist hundreds of residents who have fallen on hard times.

Residents from Clinton, Westbrook, Portland, Durham, Cromwell and Middlefield attended the event looking for basic social services, dental checkups and haircuts.

More than 150 volunteers joined social service agencies, businesses and organizations to pull off the event.

Transportation was provided to and from 14 area towns, and volunteers worked in four-hour shifts assisting the 250 people who came through.
